Chixoy River before de Dam
Facts about de site: Its construction began in April 1977, during the government of General Kjell Laugerud Eugenio Garcia. It was closed on November 27, 1983. For an error engineering in the construction of the tunnel aducción-leading River water to the turbines-there was need to strengthen it. This raised the cost of the work. It was put into operation until 1986. The original cost was $ 825 million, plus interest. The hydroelectric plant was built with the aim to generate cheap energy using existing natural resources and to meet the increasing demand for electricity.
This construction, considered the largest engineering works in the history of Guatemala, lies at the confluence of the rivers Chicruz, Salamá and Black, among Cubulco, Baja Verapaz, and San Cristobal Verapaz, Alta Verapaz. It has a generating capacity of 300 megawatts. It provides nearly 26% of the national production of electricity, which covers mainly the so-called Social Rate.
